Chromosomes are structures in the nucleus of a cell containing DNA, histone protein, and other structural proteins. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, determines whether our eyes are blue or brown, how tall we will be, and even our preference for certain types of behavior. Genes are subsections of DNA molecules linked together that create a particular characteristic. Each chromosome is made up of a single DNA molecule coiled around histone proteins. Research dating back to the s shows that every living creature has a specific set of chromosomes in the nucleus of each of its cells.
Behavioral genetics is the study of genetic and environmental influences on behaviors. By examining genetic influence, more information can be gleaned about how the environment operates to affect behavior. Almost all behaviors studied by psychologists are affected by our genetic makeup, and so the question is not whether genes are important, but how do they affect these behaviors? The old nature—nurture debate has been laid to rest by students of this discipline. We know, from thousands of studies using many different methodologies, that both genes and environment are important to understand if we hope to untangle the mysteries of virtually any behavior.
Behavioral genetic personality research has moved from findings of genetic and environmental effects to new areas. Personality disorders have been included, children and adolescents studied, gender effects evaluated, and the importance of rater sources investigated. Recently, multivariate methods have been applied to disentangle the genetic and environmental latent structure, and investigate covariance in mental disorders. Perhaps the most exciting recent developments are the investigations of situation variables, the studies of how genotypes influence how individuals select themselves into situations and other form of gene-environment correlations, and how genotype moderates the effect of situations and circumstances on behavior gene-environment interaction. In the future, we will learn how personality, partly determined by heredity, influences our entire lives. We will better understand what we experience, how we interpret the experiences and how to react to them effectively. We will learn how our mental lives develop while we interact with the environment, and we will broaden our understanding of which genes are coding for mental health and mental disorders.
Why do people act the way they do? There is no simple answer to this question, because social behaviors, like all human characteristics, are influenced by multiple factors. Contrary to a common misconception, genes do not cause behavioral or personality traits, they only influence them. Although genes may be linked to certain traits, it is unlikely that researchers will ever find a single gene that is entirely responsible for most complicated behaviors. First, each gene is not linked to one and only one trait; one gene may influence many different personality characteristics.

Some research has considered how temperament and parenting combine to predict child outcomes. Parental warmth support, affection and firm control discipline have been identified as particularly important. According to current systems theories of child social development, 3 temperament-related behaviour and parenting behaviour influence one another, and are independently associated with child socio-emotional development.
Behavior and molecular genetics informs knowledge of the etiology, structure, and development of the Five Factor Model FFM of personality. Behavior genetics uses quantitative modeling to parse the relative influence of nature and nurture on phenotypes that vary within the population. Molecular genetic methods attempt to identify specific genetic mechanisms associated with personality variation. To date, findings from molecular genetics are tentative, with significant results failing to replicate and accounting for only a small percentage of the variance. This chapter presents an overview of commonly used behavior and molecular genetic techniques, reviews the work that has been done on the FFM domains and facets, and offers a perspective for future directions.
