As a discipline, stylistics links literary criticism to linguistics. It does not function as an autonomous domain on its own, and it can be applied to an understanding of literature and journalism as well as linguistics. Literariness, in other words, is here conceived as 'a point on a cline rather than as an absolute'. Stylistics as a conceptual discipline may attempt to establish principles capable of explaining particular choices made by individuals and social groups in their use of language, such as in the literary production and reception of genre , the study of folk art , in the study of spoken dialects and registers , and can be applied to areas such as discourse analysis as well as literary criticism.

Written over the last thirty years, this collection of Professor Peter Verdonk's most important work on the stylistics of poetry clearly shows that the stylistics of poetic discourse is a diverse and valuable interdiscipline. Discussing the poetry of Auden, Heaney and Larkin amongst many others, Verdonk covers everything from intrinsic textual meaning and external context in its widest sense to the reader's cognitive and emotive response to poems. The book will appeal to all students on stylistics and literary linguistics courses, especially those focussing on poetry and poetic language. Verdonk presents his arguments clearly and in a logically coherent sequence For thirty years and more, he has championed a language-minded analytical appreciation of English poetry from his academic home at the University of Amsterdam, inspiring a large number of students in the process … Previously Verdonk wrote one form of apologia for his version of Stylistics in his contribution to Henry Widdowson's 'OILS' series … Now he has published a second overview of Stylistics, but with much more of a personal account and a usefully diachronic perspective the 'history' of his sub-title. This is very welcome since a historicized stylistics is something which has gone underdeveloped in recent years.

In linguistics, the term text refers to:. Text linguistics refers to a form of discourse analysis —a method of studying written or spoken language—that is concerned with the description and analysis of extended texts those beyond the level of the single sentence. A text can be any example of written or spoken language, from something as complex as a book or legal document to something as simple as the body of an email or the words on the back of a cereal box. In the humanities, different fields of study concern themselves with different forms of texts. Literary theorists, for example, focus primarily on literary texts—novels, essays, stories, and poems. Legal scholars focus on legal texts such as laws, contracts, decrees, and regulations. This module is concerned with the stylistic analysis of literature and is based on the premise that the decision to study literature is also a decision to study the expressive mechanics of language and vice versa. Attention is given to all three main genres poetry, prose fiction and drama ; thus the module is divided into three blocks according to the kind of text analysed. The first section examines poetry and considers topics such as patterns of lexis, phonetic and metrical organisation and the relationship to meaning; the second looks at fiction through patterns of style variation, inferencing and speech thought presentation; the third examines drama and considers topics such as the patterns in turn-taking and their relationship to the roles and functions of characters, speech act analysis and styles of politeness behaviour. At all stages of the module, the social and cultural context of the works studies will be an important consideration.
