Phonology is a branch of linguistics that studies how languages or dialects systematically organize their sounds or signs, in sign languages. Having practiced armchair linguistics for some years I should be able to sum up the difference off the top of my head, yet often I don't know which term to use. Can it be that the difference is that phonology deals with language sounds and phonetics deals with human speech sounds? And if so, well what does that mean?

Linguistic Terms and Concepts pp Cite as. Phonetics and phonology are concerned with the study of speech and, more particularly, with the dependence of speech on sound. In order to understand the distinction between these two terms it is important to grasp the fact that sound is both a physical and a mental phenomenon. Both speaking and hearing involve the performance of certain physical functions, either with the organs in our mouths, or with those in our ears. At the same time, however, neither speaking nor hearing are simply mechanical, neutral processes. We endow the sounds we make and hear with meaning.

The study of linguistic sounds is called Phonetics. Phonology is the study of systems of sounds, often the sound system of a particular language. Many IPA letters are the same as those of the English alphabet, so we place IPA spellings in square brackets to indicate that they are phonetic spellings.

It is the scientific study of speech. It is a long history, going back certainly well over two thousand years ago. It was studied as early as the 4th century B. The Phoenicians are credited as the first to create a phonetic writing system, from which all major modern phonetic alphabets are now derived [1]. The central concerns in phonetics are the discovery of how speech sounds are produced, how they are used in spoken language, how we can record speech sounds with written symbols and how we hear and recognize different sounds.

The level which concerns itself with the smallest units of language is phonetics. Phonology on the other hand is the functional classification of the sounds of a particular language. Phonetics is the study of human sounds in general without saying what function which sounds may have in a particular language.
