Posted by Max Young. So here are 3 NLP Techniques that once you are aware of, you can use with choice to accelerate rapport with anyone— and from this place to have a meaningful, fierce or deeply intimate conversation, whether that is coaching, asking someone on a date, providing feedback, or asking for that pay rise.
Human beings have a natural tendency to fall into step with each other. So after you have matched someone for a while, you can do something slightly different — slow your breathing down, uncross your legs, or scratch your nose — and if you have rapport, the other person will follow you. Remember, when people are interacting — whether they are familiar with NLP or not — they are either pacing each other, or doing something different. So what are the real-world applications of pacing and leading? Years ago I mentioned this at an NLP group I used to run; at a subsequent meeting, someone with asthma told me they had used the same principle to match their own asthmatic breathing by moving their hand, and when they gradually slowed the movement of their hand down, their breathing came back under control. Another application of pacing and leading in a business context that might seem counter-intuitive at first is in dealing with angry people, for example on a complaints desk.
Metrics details. Locomotor muscle fatigue LMMF and exercise-induced muscle damage EIMD are common conditions experienced during long-distance running due to the pooled effect of mechanical and metabolic strain on the locomotor muscles. Twenty-two highly trained runners 11 females completed two maximal self-paced km treadmill time trials in a counterbalanced crossover design: A in a tapered condition and B with LMMF and EIMD. Indicators of muscle damage, muscle metabolic strain, and endocrinological stress were assessed to investigate the physiological effects, and a three-dimensional framework of perceived fatigability was applied to investigate the perceptual effects of running with LMMF and EIMD on performance fatigability. LMMF and EIMD caused restrictions in work capacity and medium increases in blood leucocyte and neutrophil count, interleukin-6, and cortisol concentrations, collectively constituting a physiological milieu likely not conducive to high performance. LMMF and EIMD further caused large increases in perceived physical strain and large decreases in valence as well as large increases and decreases in action crisis and flow state, respectively. Under the constraint of amplified physical duress, findings are suggestive of heuristic and rational antecedents in the goal disengagement process.
