Pearson Education LTD. Pearson Education Singapore, Pte. Pearson Education Malaysia, Pte. Family s Dedication Professor Thiroux completed his final revisions to this text on the day he died. His family believes that he was holding on to life until the revisions were complete. In the nearly 30 years since this text was first published, it has been used around the world and touched many lives.

The family hopes that this legacy will continue with this edition. The book has now been in print for 28 years! I am very proud and grateful to all of you for helping me make it so. Each time I have revised it, I have tried to make it more: more all-inclusive, more relevant, and more up to date.

This has not always been easy because of the perilous and changing times in which we live. Some of the new material in this edition includes physician assisted suicide, particularly the Terri Schiavo case, non-western views of environmental issues, and global issues in business. A whole new chapter on Virtue Ethics has been added that includes non-western as well as Western views. Updated case studies have also been added. Special features ensure that students new to the study of ethics understand the concepts in the text.

Chapter Objectives at the chapter openings provide students with a summary of complex issues and outline what they can expect to learn in the chapter. Cases for Study and Discussion illustrate for students how ethical theory and discussion can be specifically applied. Each case is open-ended and encourages the student to examine his or her own ethics and views on how the situation should be handled. Chapter summaries at the end of each chapter help students to review the concepts discussed in the chapter.

Exercises for Review and Discussion Questions urge students to apply what they have learned to specific problems, such as taking a human life, lying, cheating, stealing, and breaking promises. Appendices that apply theoretical ethics to eight contemporary ethical problems: Appendices one through eight discuss moral problems in business, medicine, the environment, and more.

Each appendix contains a general discussion of the problem and discussions of specific cases. These appendices contain the author s own views on how the various moral issues in the book might be dealt with and resolved. Instructors may assign each appendix xiii. They may also hold off assigning the appendices until after students have formed their own theories and solutions to the issues and problems discussed. Supplementary Reading Lists supply resources that make the material more tangible and stimulate further exploration.

The instructor s manual contains general overviews of each chapter, class suggestions, sections on key concepts and questions, chapter summaries, and test questions.

ABC News broadcasts on videotape show how ethical issues connect to contemporary situations. The Companion Website features chapter review tests learning objectives, and study questions that students can use to assess their comprehension of chapter content.
