The Market for CSR Practices: Issues and Challenges for the Food Sector

The introduction of the Corporate Social Responsibility CSR law in , created a pool of resources for civil society organisations to execute social impact projects. However, an analysis of data for the seven years made by experts has shown that desired outcomes are yet to be achieved. While quantitative data is limited, there is subset of activities done under CSR, which either skirt the rules or do not purport to the spirit of the law. A qualitative analysis of CSR projects exhibits the tendency of companies to treat CSR funds an expense account for marketing and lobbying. This paper argues that this tendency is not simply subjected to corporate decision-making but emerge due to deep structural issues in the regulatory framework itself. Compliance to CSR rules does not only benefit the society but is also crucial for the success of an enterprise as it involves more customer engagement.

The world is looking at India as it embarks on a new phase in its journey towards being a global economic powerhouse. In this initiative, Corporate Social Responsibility is the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable economic development, working with employees, their families, the local community and society at large to improve their quality of life. Many companies assume that corporate social responsibility is a peripheral issue for their business; and customer satisfaction is more important for them. They imagine that customer satisfaction is now only about price and service, but they fail to point out on important changes that are taking place worldwide that could blow the business out of the water.

Corporate social responsibility CSR is a type of international private business self-regulation [1] that aims to contribute to societal goals of a philanthropic, activist, or charitable nature by engaging in or supporting volunteering or ethically-oriented practices. While it has been considered a form of corporate self-regulation [4] for some time, over the last decade or so it has moved considerably from voluntary decisions at the level of individual organizations to mandatory schemes at regional, national, and international levels. Considered at the organisational level, CSR is generally understood as a strategic initiative that contributes to a brand's reputation.

The aim of this contribution is to stimulate a discussion about the market for Corporate Social Responsibility CSR practices. This entails a shift of focus from contemporary approaches of analyzing the phenomenon.
